"Archaeology, Architecture and Liturgy. The Synagogue of Horvat Kur in the Context of Ancient Galilean Synagogues"

International Conference, February 6 and 7, 2012 in Leiden

A very dense network of ancient villages and synagogues is emerging at the moment ion the western shore of the Lake of Galilee. One of them is located on Horvat Kur, currently under excavation by a team of Kinneret Regional Project from Bern, Helsinki, Leiden and Bucharest Universities (www.kinneret-excavations.org).

Each of these sites has its own profile and each of the synagogues has its own story to tell about the culture and history of the ancient Galilee. Current excavations at Magdala (Dina Avshalom-Gorni and Arfan Najjar), Khirbet Hammam 15 km south of Horvat Kur (Uzi Leibner from the Hebrew University) and an expedition at Huqoq only 5 km southwest of Horvat Kur (Jodi Magness from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill), offer prime opportunities for comparative research.

It is a good time, therefore, to see things in their regional context and review some of the most important discoveries and present them to the public. Excavators, internationally renowned experts in ancient synagogue archaeology and the Galilee from Israel and the US, as well as younger scholars and students from Leiden, Utrecht, Groningen, Leuven and Bern will share their insights and discuss recent discoveries and their consequences for our understanding of ancient Galilee, the spatial and social context of early Christianity and Rabbinic Judaism. And, of course, we all would like to understand better how the synagogue at Horvat Kur might fit into the picture.

The conference is sponsored by Leiden University, Leiden University Funds (Byvanck Stichting), NOSTER, the Rijksmuseum van Oudheden, the Werkgezelschap voor de Archeologie van Palestina and other partners.

Lectures on 6 and 7 Feb will take place in The Spectrum Zaal in Plexus Complex, the public evening lecture on 7 Feb in the famous Temple Court of the Rijksmuseum.

Participation in the conference is free, a contribution of 5 Euro is kindly asked as admission to the public lecture. Persons who wish to attend the symposium are kindly requested to make reservation beforehand (j.k.zangenberg@religion.leidenuniv.nl).
